I was very happy to see the article in the Northfield News today written by reporter Clarice Grabau titled Latino Enterprise Center aims to integrate community.

I believe this is the way Rick Estenson of First National Bank adds things up. I don’t mean to say that he doesn’t know his math tables, but one thing is for sure, when it comes to building networks and connections among people, I think Rick can get 5 out of even 1+1. I know many people in Northfield would agree with me on this.
Last Tuesday March 13th, Rick brought me together with John Daniels, Bachman’s General Manager of the Lakeville Growing Range for more than 20 years. I asked a student to take a picture of us and decided to post it 
here with this note because John showed a genuine interest in exploring opportunities through the Latino Enteprise Center (LEC) to support his workers at Bachman’s. He is one of a growing number of business executives around Northfield who speaks the language I want to hear as work continues to develop the LEC into a strong organization for the advancement of the economic opportunities for Latinos/as in this region.
As I gain a deeper understanding of the specific needs of the Latino/a community and the businesses that employ them, one thing I know is appropriate and deserving, is to thank people like Rick Estenson, and the incredible network of people like him in this area who have extended their work hours, and expanded their views, to see how we can all improve our community by working together with the newest immigrants among us. The way I see it, the connections that Rick creates always add up to something greater than one would normally expect. Next time I get a “need you to meet…..somebody” note, I will be paying attention, you should too.

Cuando se trata de resultados, creo que esta es la forma en que suma Rick Estenson del First National Bank. No quiero decir que no sabe sus tablas de sumar, lo que es seguro es que cuando se trata de crear redes de contactos y conectar a la gente, Rick talvéz incluso pueda sacarle 5 a la suma de 1+1. Estoy seguro que mucha gente en Northfield está de acuerdo conmigo en este aspecto.
El Martes pasado 13 de Marzo, Rick me invitó a una reunión con John Daniels, el Gerente General de Lakeville Growing Range por más de 20 años. Le pedí a una estudiante que nos tomara una foto y decidí ponerla aquí con esta nota porque John me impresionó mucho con su interés genuino de explorar oportunidades de apoyar a sus trabajadores en Bachman’s por medio del Centro Empresarial Latino (LEC por sus siglas en Inglés). John es uno de muchos ejecutivos de empresas en la región que hablan el lenguaje que yo quiero escuchar a manera que continuamos transformando el LEC en una organización fuerte para el avance de las oportunidades económicas de los Latinos y Latinas de la región.
Conforme el entendimiento de las condiciones de la comunidad Latina se profundiza así como el de las empresas que los emplean, una cosa que yo sé que es apropiada, es el reconocer públicamente a las personas que hacen este progreso posible. Gente como Rick Estenson y la increíble red de empresarios y lideres de esta región que han trabajado horas extras y expandido su visión para acomodar ideas y perspectivas que nos permiten trabajar unidos para incorporar a los inmigrantes Latinos/as de esta región. En mi forma de ver las cosas, las conecciones que Rick crea, siempre suman algo más de lo que normalmente se espera.
La próxima vez que yo reciba una nota que dice “quiero que conozcas a esta persona”, yo estaré poniendo atención, si usted vive por acá, usted también debería seguir este ejemplo.

I just met with two energetic and committed Latina students from Carleton this afternoon. Lee Runzheimer, director of the Northfield Enterprise Center, where the Latino Enterprise Center is based, provided insightful introductory information about businesses in Northfield for the students. Both students are interested in working on a project to collect data about Latinos/as in Northfield and the greater Northfield area, for the purpose of increasing the Latino Enteprise Center’s coverage of the region’s population.

As an avid gardener, I have grown my own vegetables and other foods for many years, even as early as when I was 7 years old back in Guatemala where I maintained a garden that supplied vegetables for my family of 12 during the rainy season as an “after school chore” until I was strong enough to do “real” work after I turned 10 years old. I never gave up my gardening tradition though, at hour home in Northfield, we are almost to the end of last year’s frozen tomatoes and dried onions that we grew at our 1 acre garden in Belle Plaine, MN before we moved last September to our new home in Northfield.
Many of us Latinos in Northfield will find great value in the community garden project launched under the auspices of the Center for Sustainable Living recently. I hope 
this project will help enrich the summer diet of many Latino/a families and that this project becomes an opportunity for us to reconnect to our “roots”. Back in September when I had just moved to Northfield, I saw this emply lot next to Greenvale Park Elementary School and started talking to people about installing a school garden there to grow food for the school as some other elementary schools are doing, specially out in California where the gardens are also designed to serve as educational systems. Little did I know, that there was a garden group in Northfield much more developed and also interested in the same spot of land, so I joined their group to support their efforts and the project moved from a school based idea into a community-wide project.
As the weather changes from winter into spring, watch for activity on the green space West of Greenvale Park Elementary school. There will be a lot growing there, and don’t be surprised if as part of the garden project, we also grow a diverse, integrated and stronger community, as it is only logical that these aspects will also be part of the harvest. A community garden is a great place for a community to come together, specially when the glue that binds them is food, but it is even more important, when planting a garden also means re-planting the saved seeds of one of our most cherished traditions that we bring as Latino/a immigrants to this city.

Me gusta tener mi propia hortaliza, siempre la he tenido, aún desde muy niño, a los 7 años hasta que cumplí 10 años y me fuí a trabajar con mi Papá al rastrojo, como se le llaman a los sembradíos en Guatemala. Nunca he dejado de cultivar mis verduras a pesar de vivir en tierras lejanas a mis raíces, acá en Minnesota por ejemplo, el año pasado coseché todo el tomate y cebolla que se nos está terminando conforme llegamos al final del invierno. Estas verduras las cosechamos en una hortaliza grande que cultivé el año pasado en Belle Plaine y me traje el producto cuando nos mudamos a Northfield en Septiembre del 2006.
Para nosotros los Latinos y Latinas acá en Northfield, la huerta comunitaria desarrollada con los esfuerzos del grupo de jardineros de bajo los auspicios de la organización Center for Sustainable Living es una gran ventaja para conectarnos de nuevo a estas raices que solemos traer de nuestros lugares de origen, ya que muchos venimos de áreas rurales. El año pasado cuando llegé a Northfield, estuve viendo el lote al lado de la escuela primaria Greenvale Park y estuve proponiendole a varios líderez que establecieramos una huerta para que los niños de la escuela la cultivaran y produjeran verduras para la escuela. Luego me dí cuenta de que estaba el grupo de jardineros de Northfield que estaba tratando de poner la huerta comunitaria en el mismo lugar, así que me uní a ellos y el resultado es ahora esta huerta comunitaria que estará disponible en pocos días. Las aplicaciones están disponibles en la escuela Greenvale Park y en la Biblioteca, así como también en la aborrotería cooperativa Just Foods que está al otro lado de la calle de Servicios Latinos Mena.
Conforme las temperatures siguen subiendo, estemos pendientes de la actividad al lado Oeste del la escuela Greenvale Park. Habrá mucho que se estará cultivando allí, pero no se sorprenda si como parte de la huerta, también crece la abilidad de la comunidad Latina de Northfield de integrarse al resto de esta ciudad por medio del contacto personal. El resultado no debe limitarse a las verduras, estaremos también cosechando mejores relaciones, fortaleza que da la comunicación con los demás miembros de esta comunidad, a mi solamente me parece lógico que este sea también uno de los productos a cosechar de la huerta.
La huerta comunitaria es un lugar para pasar un buen rato o cuidar un lote de verduras, pero conforme la huerta crece, también nuestras amistades, también muchos de nosotros tenemos semillas guardades que trajimos como immigrantes a Northfield y que nos identifican con nuestras raíces, con los lugares de donde venimos y la huerta comunitaria es un buen lugar para sembrarlas y verlas crecer de nuevo.
